Crowds turned out to enjoy a busy Barnstaple Elephant Day on Saturday.

In its eighth year, the unusual community event celebrates all things elephant, based on the discovery of straight-tusked elephant fossils in nearby Summerland Street in 1844.

The family fun day included two shows by Plough Youth Arts based on the 1844 discovery, a history walk, a costumed parade plus entertainment, fairground rides, stalls and sideshows.

Simon Harvey of the organising committee said it had been a good event with probably the best weather it had ever had.

“Thank you to all the volunteers for their help,” he said.

“The Voice FM was good and was able to play music throughout the day as well as let people know what was happening.”

There will be a meeting at the end of July to look ahead at next year and Mr Harvey said they were very keen to recruit new committee members.
