Runners from across North Devon took to the streets of the capital on Sunday for the Virgin Money London Marathon.

They took part for a range of good causes and included several members of North Devon Road Runners as well as seven staff from North Devon District Hospital.

The NHS staff supported five departments via the hospital charity Over and Above, raising more than £6,000. Fundraiser Julie Whitton said: "The hospital charity is absolutely delighted that all our runners did so well and raised a large amount of money to support five of our hospital departments. I am sure they are all very tired after their run, but we are so proud of them. They are our magnificent seven."

In addition, Lisa Wells, 46, from Instow, ran her first London Marathon in five hours and two minutes.

Lisa, group manager for women and children's services at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, ran in support of the Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Trust in memory of her step-mother Carol Wells, who died in 2014.

"It's the best experience I've ever had; the atmosphere was electric the whole way round. The support from the crowds was unbelievable; I had my name on my t-shirt and people were shouting my name," she said.

Laura Tydd, 35, from Fremington, travelled to London with her friend Maureen Rothery and they ran the race together.

Laura was running for ChemoHero and completed the marathon in six hours nine minutes and Maureen - running for Leukaemia Care - in six hours one minute. Laura said: "The day was fantastic with just the most amazing atmosphere and it was brilliant to run it together with Maureen."

NDRR chairman Simon Haywood said there were some sterling performances, with both Kathryn Kyle and Sarah Francis achieving Good for their Age times and so guaranteeing a place in next year's race. Jenny Stone finished at 5:53:27.

He added: "We are immensely proud of all of our runners who completed the VLM yesterday.

"Finishing a marathon is a huge achievement and all of our athletes should now take time to reflect on their achievements and the huge amount of hard work that they have put in.
