Revellers leave it late – but town centre was packed with people as the clock struck midnight

Party-goers turned out in Barnstaple to see in the New Year – but they left it late.

You could have heard a pin drop in the Square at 11.30pm. But by 11.50pm thousands of revellers had descended on the town centre, with many lining the Longbridge and Strand to see in 2016.

The bridge was closed to traffic for the countdown; and on a clear but chilly night, crowds were treated to a spectacular fireworks display, with simultaneous launches either side of the River Taw.
