Thousands gather to enjoy Round Table fundraiser of live music and flying machines

More than 10,000 people turned out to watch the South West Birdman in Ilfracombe today (Saturday).

Once again gravity proved the ultimate winner as 15 fancy dress entries with their homemade flying machines took to the skies - briefly – before splashing back down to earth.

The Ilfracombe Round Table fundraiser is still going at the pier, with live music, stalls, activities and refreshments running until 10pm tonight.

Crowds gathered right around the harbour to enjoy the free event and organiser Leo Cooper said from the Round Table's point of view it was the 'best Birdman ever'.

“The weather has been fantastic, the standard of craft and people jumping in has been amazing and a great standard of music too,” he said.

“It's been a big impact on the local economy, not to mention the money we raise for local good causes. Last year we did £10,000 and we hope to match that, as every penny goes back into the community.

“Thank you to all our sponsors and those who supported it, without them it would not be possible.”
