Thousands of people lined the streets for Barnstaple’s 71st carnival yesterday (Saturday).

The colour and noise of the annual parade outshone the heavy showers that set in just minutes before the crowning of carnival queen Kimberley Jump.

Brollies went up as the crown came down but the smiles were as big as ever.

Kimberley, 13, was selected as this year’s queen at a special ‘queen choosing’ event at the Barnstaple Hotel in July.

The Park Community School pupil was attended by nine-year-old Sticklepath Primary School pupil Brooke Woollacott, and eight-year-old Newport Primary School pupil Alexandra Pinto.

Kimberley also received £250 prize money thanks to sponsorship from Tesco. Brooke and Alexandra each received £100.

It’s been a few years since it rained on Barnstaple’s parade – 2011 was the last wet weather carnival – but the crowds looked every bit as big.

And there was a large turn-out of entries too, with Fifth North Devon Scouts scooping the best Barnstaple and supreme champion cups for their Jungle Book-themed float.

Carnival committee chairman John White said: “On behalf of the committee we would like to thank everybody involved for making this year’s carnival a success despite the weather.

The finale with the fireworks were brilliant. Hope to see you all again to make next year’s carnival bigger and better!”
