Fire fighters confirmed no one was on board boat when it burst into flames on River Taw last night (Tuesday).

Police and fire fighters are investigating the cause of a boat fire on the River Taw in Barnstaple last night (Tuesday).

Fire fighters from Barnstaple and Braunton raced to the scene after multiple calls reporting the fire.

The boat was well alight when they arrived at 9.12pm and fire fighters got to work with two 70mm jets to fight the flames from the riverside.

By 11.15pm crews were dampening down the charred shell of the boat.

Two fire engines returned to the scene at 4.38am to continue to dampen down hot spots and search the interior of the boat.

Shortly after 6am crews confirmed no one was onboard the boat and the fire was out.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
