PHOTOS: Schools and roads closed in North Devon due to snow

A NUMBER of schools and roads across the area have been closed today (Fri) due to snow overnight.
Devon Country Council’s gritters have been leading a convoy of vehicles behind them on the A361 Link Road after earlier closures today. The road has re-opened after closing due to a jack-knifed lorry at Bonners Bridge but snow is reported to be drifing across it.
The A399 on Exmoor is closed at Friendship Cross due to drifts of up to 5ft of snow, and the B3223 and B3358 are also closed with snow blowers and JCBs on their way.
Devon County Council is urging people to take extreme care when travelling today and to expect problems on higher ground.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “County council teams have been working hard throughout the night gritting and ploughing main roads on our precautionary salting network.
“The conditions are challenging this morning and most major routes are passable with care, but we are dealing with extremely hazardous conditions on some roads such as the A361, and we would ask people to bear with us.

“Please do not make unnecessary journeys if it is not essential, but do take extreme care if you are travelling and where you can please keep to the main A and B roads and off of the minor roads.”
The Met Office has issued further warnings of ice for the weekend after the snowfall today.
The warning covers part of North Devon, including Torrington, South Molton, Chulmleigh and Exmoor.
A spokesman for the forecasters said: “Some further slight snowfalls are likely, with one-to-two cm of fresh snow in a few places.
“But the focus switches to ice with sub-zero temperatures persisting over existing snow cover for many areas and spreading back into parts of the southwest towards daybreak on Saturday.”
The warning is currently in place from 12.05am tomorrow (Sat) until 11am on Sunday.

Ilfracombe Media Arts College – closed to all students other than those who have an exam and year 11 students who can get to school safely
West Down School – closed due to snow
Marwood School – closed due to snow
Bishops Nympton Primary School – closed due to snow and staff unable to reach the school.
North Molton School – closed due to snow
Pathfield School, Barnstaple – closed due to snow and no transport from Filers

• The A361 at Mullacott Roundabout had now reopened.
The B3230 in West Down is closed at Lynton Cross due to the snow.
• On Twitter at 11:19am, @roxy_retro said: “A39 between Blackmoor Gate & Parracombe is impassable #devonroads.”
• A399 on Exmoor is closed at Friendship Cross due to drifts of up to 5ft of snow. Traffic is reported at the Benton Road junction at Bratton Flemming.
• The B3223 and B3358 are closed.
• The A361 Link Road has re-opened after a lorry jack-knifed earlier today at the Rifton Lane junction. At 8.55am, @HughHocc tweeted: “A361 trying to get convoys going behind ploughs and gritters #devonroads”.
• Devon and Cornwall Police tweeted: “#winterready reports of road between Ilfracombe High St & Mullacott Cross roundabout has 2-4” of snow extremely diff driving-#grittersonway.”
BUSES AND TRAINS
UPDATE 1.20pm: Stagecoach has confirmed a number of its North Devon bus services are now operating as follows:
Service 21: Westward Ho! to Ilfracombe via Barnstaple (21A) – now able to serve Ilfracombe.
Service 72 & 85: Holsworthy to Barnstaple via Shebbear and Torrington – endeavouring to serve Shebbear and Pyworthy from 2pm.
Service 70: Atlantic Village to Torrington via Bideford and Weare Giffard – normal service.
Service 155: Exeter to Barnstaple via Witheridge and South Molton – normal service.
Service 308: Barnstaple to Georgeham via Braunton, Saunton and Croyde – normal service.
Service 319: Barnstaple to Hartland - endeavouring to serve Hartland, Clovelly and Woolsery from 1pm onwards.
There is currently no disruption on the Tarka Line train from Barnstaple to Exeter.
Torridge District Council refuse and recycling crews are out attempting to complete their rounds today.
A spokesman for the council said: “Please be aware there may be some disruption due to the snowy and icy conditions.
“As far as possible and where it is safe to do so, the trucks will follow their normal Friday routes.”
North Devon Council said there was some disruption to waste and recycling collections today.
Collections in in Atherington and Chulmleigh were cancelled and will be collected on Monday instead.
All green wheelie bin collections were cancelled today, affecting the areas of Witheridge, Chulmleigh, Burrington and East Anstey. No extra collections will be made so residents are advised to wait for the next scheduled collection.
All black bin bags were collected as normal, including those in Ilfracombe. Only a few very rural propoerties were not reachable and will be collected on Monday.
Collections in Ilfracombe are running late due to road closures at Mullacott Cross but vehicles are on their way. Any streets in Ilfracombe that remain inaccessible will be collected on Monday.
