Police officers managed to throw the man a rope and drag him to safety as the River Torridge rose around him.

A man was rescued from the rising river underneath Bideford Long Bridge yesterday (Thursday) evening.

Police and Coastguard were called to the scene at 6.45pm to reports of a man stuck under the bridge as the tide was coming in.

Police officers based at the station directly next to the scene were quickly on hand to help the man, who reportedly had become 'stuck' by the incoming tide.

They managed to throw a rope and life belt to the man and drag him to the edge of the river.

He was met by a member of the Coastguard and brought back to the safety of the roadside.

A police spokesman said the man was checked over by ambulance crews but was unhurt, apart from being a little cold.
