A crew from Barnstaple were called to the scene of the fire late this afternoon.

BLACK smoke could be seen across Barnstaple after a set of 10-12 wheelie bins caught fire in Waterlane Close this afternoon (Wed).

Fire fighters were at the scene in Newport at around 5.30pm after being called to a fire in the open.

A wooden fenced area containing wheelie bins, believed to belong to Sanctuary Housing, had caught fire.

Fire fighters used a hosereel jet to extinguish the blaze and remained at the scene to dampen it down. Police also attended the scene.

Watch manager Pete Merrilees, of Barnstaple fire station, said the cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
