BIDEFORD took a step back in time this weekend as it celebrated its annual heritage day. Just after 10am, Sir Richard Grenville and his Elizabethan entourage set off through Mill Street and paraded through the town to the Quay. Residents and visitors to the town crowded on the quayside for the cannon firing, which marked the start of the towns first ever gig race. After the mens, womens, juniors and mixed races, the town enjoyed street performances in Jubilee Square and wandered around the farmers market. Market traders at the Pannier Market dressed up as pirates, Blazeys in Mill Street put on a hog roast and the sun shone on the town throughout the day. There were also plenty of opportunities for people to hear about the towns maritime history, with heritage walks throughout the town and a talk on Sir Richard Grenville by Andy Powell. To see more photos from Heritage Day, click the galleries in the top right of the page.
