THOUSANDS of people took advantage of the sunshine to celebrate Torrington’s annual Mayfair today (Thurs).

Torrington Silver Band led the celebrations through the town which was decorated with bunting, flowering gorse and two traditional may poles.

Crowds gathered to watch year three and four students of Great Torrington Junior School perform English country dancing in the Square.

This was followed by floral dancing, led by the school children with the whole crowd eventually joining in.

The cast of ‘A Night at the Musical’, who have raised more than £5,000 for charity through its performances at The Plough, performed for the crowd.

The Torrington Cavaliers then donned leather jackets and wigs to perform a special rendition of Grease Lightening for their annual show.

At 12pm, dignitaries marched into the Square, and the proclamation of May Fair was read to the crowd.

Emily Tyrrell, Torrington’s 83rd May Queen, her attendants and heralds then entered the Square for the crowning.

Emily was escorted by heralds Jack Margarotto and Sam Hill, attendants Maisie Ryan, Ellie James, Amy Watson, Abigail Crouch, Chloe Mayne, Saffron Sanders, Ruby Vallely and Scarlet Wise, and crowner Evie West.

After a lunch break, celebrations continued until 5pm this evening.
