Residents sign petition opposing plans for 60 new homes in Torrington.

A petition opposing plans for 60 new houses in Torrington has gathered more than 275 signatures in a week

Beechcroft Land lodged proposals with Torridge District Council this month for the 2.52 hectares of land off Hoopers Way, and they are due to be discussed by the plans committee.

The developers are seeking outline permission for 26 three-bedroom, 18 four-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom properties.

But Burwood Road resident Joan Tanton has been gathering signatures from neighbours who do not want to see the new houses built.

On handing her petition into Riverbank House on Wednesday, she said: “The access in Hoopers Way is very narrow and I don’t see how they will get those extra cars down there.

“We counted from 7-10am one morning and 168 cars went past; it is already congested with parked cars now and emergency vehicles struggle to get down there.”

In a design and access statement, architects Inspire Design Ltd said the site would provide ‘much needed housing’ for Torrington.
