New 18,000 panel sun park will be build next to exisiting wind farm in Torridge to create new ‘hybrid’ energy park.

One of the first hybrid energy parks in Britain is set to be built in Torridge.

Ecotricity has obtained planning permission to build a new sun park in Bulkworthy, next to its existing Galsworthy wind farm.

This will create one of the country's first hybrid parks, combining wind and sun energy using the same grid connection.

The addition of the 18,000 panel, five-megawatt sun park will create enough energy to power an extra 1,000 homes a year.

This brings a total of 6,000 homes powered in combination with the wind farm.

Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, said: "Hybrid energy parks like this are the future of energy in Britain.

"The combination of the wind and the sun makes for a more consistent energy supply - and the potential for Britain's energy independence is huge.

"Wind and solar made up around 13 per cent of the UK's entire electricity generation last year - while all renewables together contributed 25 per cent - but we need to be doing more."

The four-turbine Galsworthy wind farm, near Stibb Cross, was completed in late 2014 despite opposition from campaigners.
