THERE is a new live entertainment venue in Barnstaple which could be one of its best kept secrets but according to organisers has "the potential to be the best venue south of Bristol."The Factory at Roundswell is a daytime resource for Music Performance and Technology courses run by North Devon College. But after the sun goes down it transforms into a 500-capacity venue able to offer a wide range of entertainment. The college has set up the new facility in Gratton Way to give students studying Foundation Degrees in Music Performance/Technology the chance to learn their craft. At the same time, it offers a professionally-run public entertainment venue hosting a variety of events from bands and theatre to stand up comedy, art, tradeshows, workshops and more.It is truly multi-functional and the building has a full-size stage in its auditorium, plus a cafe area and state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems.Aptly named and looking innocuous from the outside, it nevertheless has a great line-up in store for those seeking top live entertainment. In fact, hearing the names Asian Dub Foundation, Audio Bullys and Jungle Drummer vs DJ Fu bandied around, you may be forgiven for thinking you were in cutting edge London! The first gig is on Friday, February 1, when Jungle Drummer Vs DJ Fu, will be joined by Script MC and The Breaks will be performing live from 8pm. On Saturday March 15 the iconic Asian Dub Foundation will be in residence too. With plenty of parking, no nearby residential areas, but still close to town and prices designed to suit a student's pocket - while open to all - The Factory could hit the spot. The Factory provides students with real work experience in a professional venue, with technical, lighting and marketing skills all things they will use in the wider world of the music and performance industry.By staffing the actual events it gives them a true insight into event management and puts North Devon students one step ahead of the rest. For more information visit www.thefactoryonline.co.uk
