THE question of parking permits at a Braunton car park has prompted hundreds to vote in a village referendum.A total of 493 parishioners were in favour of introducing permits to Caen Street car park, with 157 against - a turnout of 650 or almost 10 per cent of those eligible. The formerly free car park is owned by the parish council, which introduced charges last year out of necessity to meet maintenance costs.Despite lengthy public consultation and an exhibition, the issue remained controversial. To permit permits or not is now on the agenda for Monday's parish council meeting, when it is expected a decision will be made.
