North Devon Council will increase charges after a six year freeze.

North Devon car parking charges are set to increase this month.

The changes, which will see a 10p per hour increase in short stay car parks owned by North Devon Council, will take effect from Monday May 16.

There are also changes for long stay car parks, with charges increasing by 10p per day.

Des Brailey, leader of North Devon Council, said the charges were not a decision the council had taken lightly.

"The charges have remained the same for six years, with the running costs steadily increasing year on year," he said.

"With our main town centre car parks over capacity, we are aiming to encourage more people to use our long stay car parks, some of which are within easy walking distance of the main town centres."

The changes were met with angry reactions when they were announced in March, with town centre traders condemning the move.
