A parent of a pupil at the Park Community School in Barnstaple has aired concerns that there will be no direct bus from Roundswell as of next week.
The 8C bus which used to run the route is one of several to be cut by Devon County Council as part of a major cost-cutting exercise.
From Monday, pupils living in Roundswell will either need to walk to the Cedars roundabout to board the number 21 bus or get the 8A to Barnstaple bus station at 7.44am and the 21 from there – or walk 2.5 miles.
Service changes will also affect Park School pupils living in Whiddon Valley. The number 10 service will be scrapped, with new services put in place.
Pupils will now need to catch the number 13 to Newport Pottery at 8.06am.
In the afternoons, they will need to catch the number nine at 3.42pm.
The county council only has a statutory obligation to provide school transport for children living more than three miles away.
Roundswell parent Dawn Bennett said: “I am rather disgusted with the attitude of DCC and Stagecoach.
“Surely school children are an important issue. The whole estate has been ignored. Roundswell is a large estate and growing rapidly.”
Councillor Stuart Hughes, the county council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “Service eight and service 10A are not being withdrawn, but have been revised as part of Devon County Council’s public transport budget reductions.
“However, Stagecoach, who will be operating the route on a commercial basis, has decided the section of the journey to Park School is no longer commercially viable.”
A Stagecoach spokesperson said: “Due to Devon County Council budget cuts, there has been a reduction in funding available for bus services in the Barnstaple area.
“In partnership with the council, and following an extensive public consultation, we have worked hard to minimise any resulting changes, with the impact restricted to some of the most lightly used services.”
Other affected routes include the withdrawal of the 85C from Bude to Barnstaple and of the 325 from Lapford to Barnstaple.
Route 15X will be withdrawn in Bideford, with the 75/75A/75B services running via Clovelly Road and Pynes Lane to Atlantic Village up to every hour.
