TWO Barnstaple teachers are among a handful of finalists shortlisted for awards at the 2008 Teaching Awards, being announced in Torquay tonight (Wednesday).The spotlight could be shining on Janet Baker and Sarah Felgate, both of Orchard Vale Community School, at the South West ceremony being held at the Riviera International Conference Centre.Janet is up for the Primary School Headteacher of the Year award, while colleague Sarah is shortlisted in the Teaching Assistant of the Year category.They are among 33 finalists from 11 categories. Each winner will receive a Plato - the Teaching Awards symbol of excellence in education. OutstandingThey will then go on to join other winners from across Britain at a top London theatre for the star-studded UK final, televised by the BBC on October 19.Congratulating the shortlisted finalists, Caroline Evans, chief executive of the Teaching Awards said: "The influence of these outstanding individuals on the lives of children and their families cannot be underestimated."Society needs to recognise their contribution and that teaching is a fulfilling career.
