Parents in North Devon are being invited to an event this month which will help them to get up-to-date with the current range of educational and career options available to their children. Connexions Cornwall and Devon is hosting a career options event on January 31. It coincides with the options choices young people make in years 9 and 11. Connexions centres in Barnstaple, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Plymouth, Bodmin, St Austell, Truro, Camborne and Penzance will open until 7pm so parents can pop in after work and talk to a trained personal adviser. Area manager for Barnstaple, Mark Walker said, "The options young people select at these key stages of their school life can influence their future path and it is vitally important that they are as well informed as possible about the decisions they make. "This is applicable to parents and carers too, as their opinions are the single most important influence on a young person's choices. However, there have been a lot of developments in education and training since parents were at school, so we're offering them the opportunity to talk to our personal advisers about all the possible career progression routes - and what might be best for their son or daughter."Connexions is the specialist careers and advisory service which helps all 13-19 year olds to get into learning and work. Its staff can provide information on the full range of employment, training, further and higher education opportunities available regionally and nationally.Parents unable to attend the Options Open events can still receive advice, by phoning 0800 97 55 111 or by emailing a personal adviser via the Connexions website www.connexions-cd.org.uk.
