Funding will be sought to help fund a project to enhance Barnstaples riverfront area, with a focus on the Strand and links to the Square. The council is currently using a £10,000 government Coastal Communities grant to develop a strategy for the area, including new lighting, signage and links to the new Anchorwood Bank development. Other ideas being looked at for the Strand include a cycle hub; heritage assets; public art; a play area; and beach. The team is also looking at developing regular riverside events. Speaking at todays (Wednesday) Opportunity Barnstaple event, North Devon Council regeneration officer Sally Nelson, said the next step would be to identify possible funding sources. We are looking at ideas that support Barnstaples maritime setting and mercantile heritage and are working on fully developed projects that we can bid into, she said. Its important that we have projects that are ready to go.
