Business leaders met in Barnstaple this morning (Wednesday) to discuss a strategy for unlocking the towns potential. The redevelopment of Seven Brethren was on the agenda at the Opportunity Barnstaple event, along with ideas to enhance the riverfront and increase footfall to the High Street. Details about a pilot free Wi-Fi scheme and study being undertaken to protect the town from flooding between now and 2115 were also discussed at the meeting at the Barnstaple Hotel. Ellen Vernon, North Devon Councils (NDC) economic development manager, said the council was working with experts to create a prospectus that sets out the wider opportunities for Barnstaple. We recognise that we have assets and we need a coordinated effort to bring these sites forward, she said. We want to celebrate Barnstaples maritime heritage, create a vibrant waterside and promote the town a centre for urban living. Councillor Par Barker, the councils lead member for regeneration, said the event was just the start of the journey. She added: We had more than 60 stakeholders come along to todays event, including businesses, developers and representatives from public bodies. This shows there is a real economic interest in our town. Although were at the very early stages of some major regeneration projects, were keen to move forward with a coordinated approach to developing the town. Therefore, I look forward to seeing how these exciting opportunities progress.
