A former Barnstaple Boys Secondary Modern School pupil went on to make a big splash in the world of swimming but youd have never guessed it reading his old school report.Michael Bennett went on to represent Devon, the West of England and even the army at water polo. He is also a former president of the Devon Amateur Swimming Association and Barnstaple Swimming Club. But despite marking him out as top of the class in most areas, the old school report from 1944 had the then 12-and-a-half-year-old down as only a fair swimmer, capable of only one length. The surprise entry was discovered by Gerald Thorne, organiser of a school reunion at Barnstaple Rugby Club on June 11, from 7.30pm. Gerald, who has been busy collecting memorabilia held by ex-pupils, said: As a member of Barnstaple Swimming Club for years, I always looked up to Mike with his outstanding skills in the water. So to see he was only fair at accomplishing a length of the old Rock Park pool which was only 33-and-a-third-yards, is incredible. Michael, 84, from Barnstaple, joked: I think I improved so my teacher Mr Rablen can be proud. The reunion is for ex-pupils of the school also known as Derby College from 1939-1972.
