ANYONE who's ever wondered about the fate of old library books should look no further than Barnstaple Library next month.

The library will be holding its first ever Grand Book Sale of withdrawn library stock on Saturday, July 18.

The books will be for sale at bargain prices and come from all across Devon; they cover a wide range of subjects from history, health and travel to biographies, fiction and children's books. There will also be a good selection of DVDs and spoken word cassette tapes.

Cllr Stuart Barker, Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said: "At any one time, Devon County Council libraries stock more than 1.2 million books.

"All these books are available for loan and reservation. However we also purchase more than 100,000 books every year and space has to be made on the shelves for these new books.

"To achieve this outdated, less popular and tired stock has to be withdrawn. By offering them for sale we hope we are giving readers some excellent bargains as well as using their council tax wisely by trying to recoup as many of our costs as possible."
