Northam Burrows has a busy line-up of free events for families this October half term

Families looking for free events to keep the kids entertained this October half term are invited to join the Northam Burrows rangers for a busy line-up from building bird boxes to rockpooling and spooky trails.

Whether people are looking to keep the children diverted, explore the great outdoors or simply enjoy some fresh air together, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

On Tuesday, October 27 from 2pm to 4pm, drop in at the Northam Burrows Visitor Centre to build your own bird or bat box, make paper plant pots, learn about wildlife-friendly gardening projects and take away seeds to grow over winter as part of a Wildlife Friendly Gardening Event.

Then on Thursday, October 29, meet the rangers at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am for a fun and educational guided walk called Fungi Foray and learn to spot fungi on the grasslands of Northam Burrows. Runs until 12pm.

Later on Thursday, October 29, from 2pm to 4pm, find the rangers on the beach near Westward Ho! Slipway and enjoy a Rockpool Ramble.

Plus a Spooky Trail is running between Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, November 1. Collect a trail map from the visitor centre any day between 10am and 5pm and solve the clues to discover the hidden secret.

All events are free to attend, with no booking required – simply turn up and join in!

Children must be accompanied by an adult and appropriate clothing and footwear is recommended.

Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, lead member for culture and community engagement at Torridge District Council, said: “As a mum to two young children myself, I know how keeping them entertained can be a challenge, especially at this time of year!

“These activities on the Burrows offer a fantastic opportunity for families to connect with nature and discover the huge variety of wonderful wildlife in our local area… and best of all - they’re free!

“From building your own bird or bat box, to exploring the rock pools at Westward Ho!, each event is a fun and educational way to learn something new, get outdoors in the fresh air and make the most of the school break.”

For those aged 16 and over, there are also a range of Conservation Volunteering Events happening throughout the rest of the year as well as Autumn Guided Walks.
