The memorial tree was reportedly chopped down in Northam and now witnesses are being asked to contact police.

Witnesses are being sought after a memorial tree was cut down in a Northam graveyard.

Danny Ho, from Barnstaple, planted the tree in memory of his mother Lin Tai Poon, in 2000.

But on August 10 it was reported someone entered the graveyard and cut the tree down with a chainsaw.

Danny said: "Somebody reported it to me; their son's grave is next to my mother's and he rang me to ask if I had seen what had happened.

"It was quite a shock. I don't know why people would do that, nobody understands it."

The incident was reported to the police and to the district council.

Jane Whittaker, leader of Torridge District Council, said she had been contacted about the matter.

She said: "We believe somebody knows something about what has happened."

Anyone who has any information can contact police on 101 quoting log 849 of August 10.
