Northam couple plagued by mould problems

Couple fear for the health of their young children after black mould continues to grow in their flat.
A NORTHAM couple are concerned for the health of their children due to black mould which they say has plagued their flat for three years.
Beverley Martin and her partner Roger Marlow claim to have fought a constant battle against the mould since they moved into their flat in Morwenna Park Road three years ago.
They have complained numerous times to landlord Tarka Housing, and despite being issued with mould kits the black mould in their bedroom continues to grow through.
The couple are now concerned the issue is causing health problems for their six-week-old son Matthew and five-year-old daughter Carmen.

“My health visitor came around and when she saw the mould, said it was not a suitable environment for such a young baby,” Beverley said.
“We keep the flat well ventilated but every time we use the mould kits it just grows back through. I don’t know what else to do.”

Beverley said she feels Tarka is ignoring their plight and claims it has replaced a window in the flat opposite which has similar problems.
“We just want to get out now, but no one will exchange with us because they see the mould and run a mile. We feel so stuck.” she added.
Michael Curtis, property services manager for Westward Housing, who manages Tarka Housing, said the mould was due to condensation.
He said: “I regret condensation is causing this customer household such discomfort as my team works hard to ensure that tenants’ properties are in good condition.
“At this property in Northam, Westward installed a new heating system, an extractor fan and added vents in the bedrooms to help alleviate condensation issues in 2012.”
Mr Curtis said a stock condition surveyor had met with the couple and given them advice, noting that the amount of condensation had reduced since last year.
He said should the couple follow the advice, the problem should disappear.
