The Met Office has warned of slow-moving, early-afternoon thunderstorms moving into torrential rain this evening. An amber weather warning for rain is in place from 4pm today until 6am tomorrow (Friday). A yellow weather warning is currently in place until then, but as yet the region has remained relatively dry. A chief forecaster for the Met Office said: Early afternoon thunderstorms are expected to become slow-moving and merge together to produce some larger and more persistent areas of thunderstorms. This will lead to torrential rain with 30-40 mm of rain possible in an hour and a good chance of as much as 60-80 mm rain in two-to-three hours in some places. As well as this, frequent lightning and large hail are possible. Flooding of homes and businesses could be likely, and the Met Office has warned fast flowing or deep floodwater could mean a danger to life.
