NORTH Devon will benefit from a prime time television slot when the episode of James May's Toy Stories recounting this summer's bid to set a model railway record along the Tarka Trail is screened on Christmas Day.

The attempt in August was de-railed when the weather and vandals forced efforts to build the tiny Hornby railway along a 10-mile route between Barnstaple and Bideford to be aborted some two miles short of its destination.

Around 400 local volunteers had spent 12 hours battling against the odds to try and complete the project and set a world record.

But the attempt created a memorable attraction for the volunteers and the many spectators who came out to watch and cheer them on - and many of them will now feature in the BBC 2 programme, which is due to be screened at 7pm on Christmas Day.
