North Devon Rugby Ramble returns for 2022

The popular Rugby Ramble event is set to make a welcome reappearance early next year, giving North Devon rugby fans the chance to step out in support of those who are facing the end of their life of losing someone they love.
The event consists of an 8km walk (with beer stops for rehydration purposes!) followed by a curry and the chance to watch England take on Wales in the Six Nations at Barnstaple Rugby Club.
Every pound raised will help North Devon Hospice care for those facing the impact of terminal cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.
Registration is now open for the Rugby Ramble, taking place on Saturday, February 26, and organisers are expecting another sell-out.
“We were delighted to be completely full for the first ever Rugby Ramble in early 2020, but of course we couldn’t hold the event in 2021 due to Covid. So the appetite for the coming event in February is really high, and we expect it to sell out quickly once again,” said Jadeen Lowe from North Devon Hospice’s fundraising team.
She added: “It will be wonderful to bring rugby fans back together for a great day out. They’ll start with a hot pasty at Barnstaple Rugby Club, before heading out on their scenic 8km walk. To make sure everyone is hydrated, there is even a beer stop along the way! Upon their return, walkers are rewarded with a cracking curry and a congratulatory pint, before they settle in to enjoy England vs Wales on the big screens back at the rugby club. All that is included in their entry fee, which is just £18 before 9th December.”
Nigel Rayer is one man who knows how vital the Rugby Ramble is to local people. Nigel, 59, from Buckland Brewer, has a cancer in his spine which initially left him paralysed, but amazingly he regained some mobility and even took part in the 2020 Rugby Ramble, walking some of the way and using his wheelchair when walking became too painful.

“North Devon Hospice have been supporting me and my wife Anita since my diagnosis. I honestly couldn’t imagine how our lives would have been without them,” he said.
“So I hope lots of people sign up to the Rugby Ramble and raise lots of money for the hospice, because it really does make a difference to people like me.”
Nigel, himself a keen former rugby player, is even hoping to take part in the event again this February.
“It was such good fun last time, being together for a beer and some great rugby on the telly. We’ve all missed that so much over the last couple of years, so I will be the first to sign up for the Rugby Ramble. I might not be able to walk much, and will rely on my wheelchair and my mates to push me round, but I want to be there to have some fun and show my support for the hospice.”
Rugby Ramble is Kindly sponsored by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd. Huw Owen, who is Project Manager on the company’s A361 North Devon Link Road Scheme, said it was a pleasure to be involved and encouraged people to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to sponsor this Rugby Ramble and support such a worthwhile cause. This promises to be a great day for people to come together, enjoy a scenic walk through the Devon countryside followed by a meal, refreshments and an exciting international rugby match. North Devon Hospice fully deserves our support and I hope for a sell-out event and a memorable day for all.”
To celebrate the launch of the Rugby Ramble, places are being offered for the special price of just £18. This includes a Rugby Ramble hat, two free pints, a pasty at the start of the walk, curry at the finish and the England v Wales Six Nations clash on the big screens at Barnstaple Rugby Club. This offer only lasts until midnight on 9th December, so visit rugbyramble.co.uk to register now.
