People across North Devon have been signing the organ donor register for National Transplant Week.

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust staff were in Barnstaple High Street on Friday to encourage members of the public to sign up.

A total of 16 people signed up in the first two hours alone, with dozens more asking for information.

The Gazette has re-launched Katie’s Appeal – in memory of Barnstaple teenager Katie Gammon – to encourage people to sign up and save lives.

Katie, who died last month, received a double lung transplant in 2013 and campaigned to raise awareness of organ donation.

Members of the Bideford Ladies’ rugby team have backed the drive, and Barnstaple Rugby Club has been doing its bit to tackle the shortage of donors in North Devon, too.

Anyone who has signed up to the register is encouraged to share their decision with friends and family, and to tweet a picture of themselves making a ‘hand heart’ using the hashtag #sayidonate.
