NEW figures show 42 per cent of all household waste collected in North Devon is now recycled, instead of going to landfill.

With more waste now being recycled, the council is asking residents to help recycling drivers to collect even more by squashing their plastic bottles and tin cans.

Cllr Paul Yabsley, Lead Member for Works and Recycling, said: "To help us collect even more recyclable waste, we need to make more space on our recycling lorries and vans, which is where the wash and squash reminder comes in.

"Squashing your plastic bottles and tins before putting them into your green box will make a huge difference to our teams. And as it is all hand sorted, washing your containers first will make it an easier and pleasanter job all round.
