North Devon Council is reviewing its tax reduction scheme

People on low incomes are facing a raft of changes to North Devon’s council tax reduction scheme.

North Devon Council is consulting on the proposals, which will affect the amount the tax is reduced for those of working age on low incomes.

The review includes limiting the number of dependent children taken into account to two, as well as reducing the amount of time someone can be out of the country and still get a reduction to four weeks.

It is proposed to base the reduction on a set minimum income for self-employed earners after one year’s self-employment and to backdate new claims to a month at most.

The council says the changes will bring it in line with those being made by the Government in housing benefit and universal credit.

The consultation runs until September 4 and can be found at northdevon.gov.uk/consultations
