A pair of North Devon men are taking on the London Marathon for a charity that supports women with a rare lung condition. Rob Weatherley, 43, of Rob Weatherley Electricals, and Adam Yeo, 44, of Wright Property, will be running in aid of the charity LAM Action, which helps women with the incurable illness lymphangioleiomyomatosis, better known as LAM. The pair are hoping to jointly raise £4,000, in support of the estimated 250 women in the UK currently diagnosed with LAM, a disease which progressively destroys lung tissue. One of those women is Lynn Duncan, the aunt of Robs wife Lisa. Lynn, 55 from Barnstaple, who was diagnosed with LAM in 2012, said: Im so proud of Rob and Adam. LAM Action is a very small, little known charity that supports research into the disease and tries to raise awareness with health professionals, as it is thought many cases of LAM are being misdiagnosed as asthma or other pulmonary diseases. Being told that you have a condition with no cure that is life limiting was very difficult to come to terms with. It has affected my life in so many ways: Im in constant pain and suffer various bouts of breathlessness. I can no longer take the long walks on the beach and through the countryside that I used to and become tired and fatigued very quickly. In 2014, Rob and his friend Jon Gay, also of Wright Property, took on a Lands End of John OGroats cycle for the charity. Rob will be running on April 24 despite having vowed never to take part again after running in the 2007 London Marathon. He said: My first marathon attempt was a disaster. It was a unusually hot year, and I felt should have done much better, but ended up having to pretty much walk the last 10 miles, and was in a lot of discomfort. Adam, who ran in the 2012 London Marathon, said: This year I know I can get myself in the shape I need to be in but make a bigger commitment and help other people. Lisa and Rob are organising a fundraiser at Barnstaple Rugby Club on the afternoon of Sunday, April 3. As part of it, a beautician will be waxing Rob and Adam. There will also be a raffle with prizes including a weekend break for two, and two tickets donated by Plymouth Argyle FC to watch a match at the club. Among other attractions will be face painting, a bouncy castle, cake stalls and food. You can support Rob and Adam at www.justgiving.com/rob-weatherly3 or www.justgiving.com/adam-yeo.
