North Devon is gearing up for a week of beach cleans as part of a Marine Conservation Society (MSC) national campaign.
The Great British Beach Clean runs this weekend from Friday to Monday.
Charlotte Coombes, MSC Beachwatch officer, said: “Beach litter has steadily risen over the two decades we’ve been recording it on UK beaches.”
In light of this growing problem, the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and North Devon FLAG funded Clean Marine Project are coordinating 10 beach cleans.
The National Trust, Bideford Tesco and Parkdean will be organising events at Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and Croyde.
Natalie Gibb, clean marine project officer, said: “Last year, surveys on Croyde and Westward Ho! found that the top five items of beach rubbish were food containers, crisp and sweet wrappers, small plastic pieces and string from broken fishing nets.
“It will be really interesting to look at what we find this year and I hope that this information will help us think of ways to combat the marine litter problem at source.”
