Amigos Worldwide is driving a push to reach 400 sponsored children in Uganda by the end of the year.

A North Devon charity is hoping to sponsor 400 Ugandan children through education by the end of 2015.

Barnstaple-based charity Amigos Worldwide runs sponsorship schemes to help young Ugandans complete their education.

The charity so far has 351 children under its wing, but is urging more people to come forward to help them reach the magical 400 mark.

Director Phil Pugsley said: “At present, one in four Ugandans do not have the opportunity to complete their secondary school education.

“You can sponsor a child for 55 pence a day – this small amount of money makes a huge difference.”

As well as an education, the sponsored children – who come from backgrounds of poverty - get a school dinner every day, which could be their only proper meal.

Sponsors can also write to their children and receive replies and photographs.
