Surfers Against Sewage is urging people to take part in a series of beach cleans this week.

The beach and river cleans will be held by volunteers in Barnstaple, Croyde, Saunton and Greysands at Appledore as part of more than 460 nationwide autumn events.

The Croyde beach clean will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) at Ruda end of the beach, from 3.30pm.

On Thursday (October 25) there will be a clean at Rock Park in Barnstaple, from 11am-1pm, meeting at the corner of the park nearest the former park and ride. There will be donated refreshments and cake.

A clean-up at Greysands will take place on Saturday (October 27), 2-4pm, meeting at the end of Burrows Lane in Appledore.

And the final event will be held at Saunton on Sunday, November 4, 11am-1pm, meeting at the bottom of the slipway. Hot drinks will be provided.

Ben Hewitt, director of projects and campaigns at Surfers Against Sewage, said: “The scale of this clean - the biggest Autumn clean across the UK – will provide us with vital data to inform the Government’s decisions on a new deposit return scheme.

“We need a simple scheme that includes all bottles and cans. After our beach cleans we will be able to specifically show the range of bottles and cans ending up polluting our beaches and rivers.”
