A Bideford man who stood up to raise money for Cancer Research UK has died aged 56.

A man who stood up against his cancer diagnosis and rallied tirelessly to raise funds to help fight the disease has died aged 56.

Nigel Hammett, from Bideford, was told his bowel cancer had returned days before he was due to get the all clear after undergoing treatment.

Undeterred by the fact his cancer was terminal, the father-of-two joined Stand Up To Cancer and raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.

At the time he told the Gazette: “If I can use what I am going through to help just one less person hear the words ‘you have cancer’, I know it will be worth it.”

Nigel’s condition deteriorated this year, and he died peacefully at North Devon Hospice on Monday, January 12. His funeral will be on Thursday, January 29 at St Mary’s Church in Bideford, 10.45am, followed by the crematorium at 11.40am.
