In the morning members of North Devon Labour Party welcomed staff, patients and commuters to North Devon District Hospital with a special birthday banner. In the afternoon members of Save Our Hospital Services presented staff at A and E and the MAU with special NHS 70 birthday cakes., The National Health Service was born on July 5, 1948. The small group of SOHS members also unfurled a giant banner thanking NHS staff for 70 years of service. Local Labour spokesman Mark Cann said: It is really important that we mark this anniversary here in North Devon. With the constant threat to our local hospital services, this is a timely reminder of how much we value what the NHS does. Today is an opportunity to say thank you to all the great staff at NDDH, our local hospitals, our GP practices and all those working to maintain our NHS. It is also a day to remind everyone how important it is that we fight to preserve the NHS as a public service. The NHS is Labours proudest achievement. We cherish the way it puts people first and supports us at every stage of our lives, but we need to work together to ensure it serves us for generations to come.
