Is it fourth time lucky for derelict Ilfracombe hotel as new planning application is lodged?

New plans have been lodged to turn the former Berkeley Hotel in Ilfracombe into 11 apartments.

The derelict hotel in Wilder Road has been something of an eyesore for a decade and featured prominently in the town’s ‘stalled sites’ list.

Now Berkeley House Developments Ltd, which bought the site at auction earlier this year, has lodged plans for 11 flats.

The hotel was hit by fire in 2007 and has been derelict ever since and the subject of several planning applications.

Permission was granted for 11 flats under a previous owner in 2007 but lapsed and was refused in 2012 due to a lack of a section 106 agreement for contributions to local services.

In 2014 yet another owner sought to convert it to eight apartments, but the application was withdrawn.

The bid by the current owner says it seeks to provide good quality accommodation while bringing an unused ‘feature’ building back into use.

Pictures submitted with the application show the building has suffered heavy fire damage and a collapse of the roof in the lounge area.
