Listed building ‘will be utilised’ by developers and stay in the town
The Oliver Buildings are set to remain in Barnstaple and will be part of a new development.
North Devon Council leader Des Brailey said he had met with Anchorwood Bank developers Wessex Investors for discussions about the Grade II listed buildings.
“The developer is now going to utilise those buildings and work up a scheme to bring back to planning,” said Mr Brailey.
“The message is the Oliver Buildings will remain.”
Last year Wessex sought to get the listed status of the former Shapland and Petter buildings reviewed, but last month the Government rejected the bid.
The Barnstaple Buildings Preservation Trust (BBPT) had ambitions to see the buildings made into a ‘cultural gateway’ to Barnstaple, but the plans by Wessex have yet to be revealed.
Mr Brailey said: “I suspect they will be allowed to make certain changes, because the outside is listed, but the inside isn’t.
“I am pleased now that it’s come to a conclusion and the developer can now move the whole site on.”
