Work is to start next week on the construction of a new footway and cycle route in Winkleigh. Contractors working for Devon County Council will be widening and improving a section of existing footpath that runs beside the A3124 from its junction with Court Walk northwards to the Sports Centre entrance. This improvement scheme will provide a dedicated off-road cycling and walking route between the village centre and the community sports centre. The £90,000 scheme includes street lighting and a vehicle activated speed sign which will make access to the sports facilities much safer for the local community Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment said: "I am extremely pleased to see another pedestrian and cyclist friendly scheme going ahead. It will provide a much needed route between the sports centre and the village and I'm sure it'll be well used by adults and children alike.""One of our primary objectives in our transport strategy for Devon is to provide opportunities for, and encourage, walking, cycling, and other outdoor leisure and recreation, to increase levels of physical activity and improve health. In line with this, the Winkleigh scheme fits the bill perfectly."Devon County Councillor for Torrington Rural John Rawlinson said: "This is an exciting development for Winkleigh, as it will enable young people to attend the sports centre in safety. It will also enable mothers with young children to get to the playing field with ease and gain access to the play equipment."There is a double bonus to be gained by this development. As well as safer access, it will also improve the appearance of this part of the village.
