TORRIDGE District Council has appointed Darren Sussex as affordable housing officer. His role will be to develop ways of bringing more affordable housing to the area - either through new builds or by using existing housing stock. He will work closely with the Housing Renewal team in identifying empty homes and redundant buildings which could be brought back into use. Darren's appointment doubles the capacity of the Council in the area of affordable housing as he will also be working closely with Rachel Webdell, the Strategic Enabling Officer, whose role is very similar in identifying not only buildings but also land which may be suitable for affordable housing.Using Government guidelines, he will be looking at current and future planning applications to ascertain if affordable housing should be provided in a particular proposed housing development. And by talking with Registered Social Landlords and other providers, he will be trying to identify more possible affordable housing opportunities.Lead Member for Affordable Housing Cllr Philip Collins said: "There is a real need for affordable housing in our area, and the appointment of Darren shows just how serious Torridge views housing issues. I'm delighted to welcome him to our team.
