Councillors have today (Thursday) approved plans for a brand new youth hostel at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Abbotsham.
Councillors have given their ‘whole-hearted’ support to plans for a new youth hostel in North Devon today (Thursday).
Torridge District Council’s plans committee unanimously approved the proposals for three barn-style accomodation buildings at the Ultimate Adventure Centre in Abbotsham.
UAC owner Russ Johns started the business in 2007 and said it has grown ‘extremely well’ over the last 10 years.
Planning agent Maria Bailey added: “This offers something which is quite different and very unique in terms of tourism in the area.
“I think it’s a real coup for Torridge - simple, quality accommodation for people at an affordable price.
“This project will have national recognition and will get Torridge on the map with visitors.”
Councillors raised a few queries over the safety of the atenuation pond and planting adequate trees, but were told these would be alleviated in planning conditions and by the applicant.
Cllr Peter Christie said: “We used to have three Youth Hostels in North Devon; one in Lynton, one in Instow and one in Hartland.
“We keep talking about tourism and yet we keep losing accommodation.”
Councillors also praised applicant Russell Johns for his communication with residents and the parish council.
Cllr Margaret Brown added: “One of the nicest things about this application is it is a pleasure to see everybody has worked together.
“It’s fantastic to see.”
Work is set to begin on the Youth Hostel buildings in the very near future.
