North Devon’s newest gin distillery is being officially opened on Saturday to mark World Gin Day.
The Atlantic Spirit Distillery, based at The BIG Sheep, is the brainchild of master distiller Quinton Davies and award-winning brewer Simon Lacey, who runs the Country Life Brewery, based at the Abbotsham attraction.
Mums and dads are being invited to be among the first to sample the first two gins produced by the distillery – a hibiscus gin and a lemon and thyme gin, served with Fever Tree tonic.
There’s free entry for parents on Saturday and Sunday, with the gin bar open from 1-4pm on both days. Visitors will be able to speak to the distiller about the botanicals, many of which come from RHS Rosemoor, and how they are blended to make such a smooth gin. Water for the gin is being supplied by Tarka Springs of Torrington.
The BIG Sheep director Rick Turner said Atlantic Spirit hoped to produce world class gins here in North Devon and replicate the national awards and recognition that Simon’s real ales have enjoyed over the past 20 years.
He added: “I am a huge fan of boutique gin and with the current popularity of using unique blends of botanicals to make amazing flavourings, we know that the distillery will be a massive hit with our visitors.
“I have of course had to try the gin and can vouch that it is totally awesome.”
