New currency promises golden stay on Exmoor

Launch of the ‘Exmoor Guinea’ to help boost tourism and the economy.

EXMOOR is fighting back to beat the recession with its own form of ‘quantitative easing’ by introducing a free currency in the shape of the ‘Exmoor Guinea’.

Launched in the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth today (Wednesday) the currency is aimed at helping visitors get more from their stay and make savings on special offers and discounts during the next three months.

Guineas can be downloaded from today via the Visit Exmoor website at or collected from National Park Centres in Dulverton, Dunster and Lynmouth plus visitor centres around the National Park.

Visitors can redeem their Guineas at the tourism businesses in a variety of ways. This could range from a free bottle of wine when ordering a two course meal for two at selected restaurants and 20 per cent off an hour’s ride across the moors - worth 5 per rider - to 10-15 per cent off accommodation prices.

It has been calculated that by using the Exmoor Guineas on their stay, visitors could save anything up to 50 or more on a weekend break.

The project came from an emergency meeting set up by Ian Rigby, chairman of the Lyn Economic and Tourism Alliance, involving Exmoor National Park Authority, National Trust, Lynton Town Council, TIC and businesses to see how they could respond to a poor summer season being experienced by local tourism.

“We realise times are tough for many of our visitors so the Exmoor Guinea will provide an extra welcome treat and some real savings during their visit to the area,” said Mr Rigby.

“Exmoor is a fantastic place to visit at any time of year and we hope this new initiative will encourage people to come and enjoy our amazing countryside and local produce.”
