Babcock Marine in Appledore awarded multi-million pound contract for third Navy vessel.

APPLEDORE Shipyard has been awarded a multi-million pound contract to build a third vessel for the Irish Navy.

News of the 50million Euro (£41million) contract awarded to shipyard operators Babcock Marine comes after the completetion of the first offshore patrol vessel (OPV) LÈ Samuel Becket.

The ship, built at the Appledore Shipyard, was officially named and commissioned last month following a successful completion of sea trials.

Andrew Hamilton, shipbuilding director at Appledore, said: “Babcock is delighted to have been awarded a contract to build a third offshore patrol vessel (OPV) for the Department of Defence.

“The successful completion of the first vessel and continued progress on the second vessel, both on time and to budget, underlines our proven track record as a leading naval support business.

“This third award reinforces the skills and capabilities of our workforce, while demonstrating our customer’s confidence in our ability to safely and securely deliver this complex programme of work.”

The shipyard employs more than 300 people across North Devon.
