QUICK action by neighbours and fire crews helped save the day when a thatched house in Market Street, Hatherleigh, caught fire on Monday evening.

Neighbours sprayed water from a garden hose onto the burning thatch until fire fighters from Hatherleigh, Okehampton and North Tawton arrived.

They quickly got the upper hand and stripped burning thatch away from around the chimney breast. Only five per cent of the roof was involved. Eight pumping appliances and four specialist appliances were initially called out.
