SIR - There are many very talented young people in North Devon. You may have heard them play at a school concert or at the North Devon Festival. Unfortunately not all the children who would like to pursue this dream are able to do so. They may have been introduced to music-making at school but for some it just costs too much to continue having lessons, or to find a better instrument which will enable them to progress. They might find it beyond their means to attend a summer school or to go to a concert. This is where local charity Young Musicians' Support, which operates under the umbrella of the Dartington (North Devon) Trust, steps in offering financial support to promising youngsters. Auditions are held once a year to find worthy individuals and YMS is now inviting applications from anyone who qualifies. Candidates must be under 18 and show commitment to learning an instrument or having vocal training. They don't need to have taken graded exams. Do you know a young person who might be interested? Perhaps your own child shows promise. If so, please contact YMS by phoning Heather Shorten 01805 603386 or e-mailing Karen Hopper at hopperfamily@onetel.com and we will send out an application form. Closing date for applications is 16th February and the auditions will be held on 8th March - so don't delay.Karen Hopper Lower Loxhore.
