A team of community volunteers are rallying around to help paint their local pub in time for the summer season.
Plans by landlords Gareth and Hayley Chastney to redecorate The Muddiford Inn were put on hold over the winter thanks to severe flooding and a road closure.
Now they are hosting two painting weekends in May and are offering free refreshments and a barbecue for the community volunteers who come and help out.
There has already been a great response from local tradespeople and pub regulars, but more people are invited to join in as many hands will make light work.
Working with local painter and decorator Colin Reed, there will be prep days on Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13, followed by painting the next weekend.
Gareth said originally they had planned to paint the pub last year, but the closure of the main road due to roadworks put things on hold.
Then in January this year torrents of water threatened to flood the inn, but the community turned out in force and kept the worst of the water away.
Gareth said: “If it were not for the villagers we would have been flooded inside. The fire brigade came as well, they broke the wall down and allowed the water to escape from the pub.
“There must have been about 20-30 people and that’s when we realised the strength of the community spirit here, we were quite overwhelmed.”
The pub hosts several community events, including dog show this May 28, a September music festival and a bonfire night party, as well as being used as a meeting point by local organisations.
There has already been a great response to the appeal for painters, with several people offering to help, as well as local builders and Johnstone’s Paint in Barnstaple has offered help with paint and equipment.
Decorator Colin Reed said: “The pub has been good to the community by doing lots of things including raising money for a defibrillator for the village. We all want the pub to look good and to be busy, otherwise it’s just another pub closed in a small village.”
All are welcome to join the painting days and equipment will be provided, but wear old clothes. Please register your interest in attending at the pub, call 01271 850394 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
