A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital with a suspected ruptured aorta of the heart after a collision involving his bike and three cars on the A39 near Kilkhampton.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 9.45am on Saturday and the rider, a 45-year-old local man, was flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Police said his condition then deteriorated and he was flown to St Georges Hospital in London with the suspected heart injury.

The road was closed on Saturday for several hours as police investigators examined the scene.
